Abstract
This paper elaborated the performed
analysis on the differences between GSM network and CDMA network in technology.
As we know, the advances in technology is very fast, because some people will
be found new experience in their life. For example, the high-tech of
communication that happened in the world, like mobile phone, television,
computer and many others. This high-tech communication bring some network in
the world.
Now, many people used some mobile
phone to communication with each others. Because of this high-tech
communication, in mobile phone there is a network. The name of the networks are
GSM network and CDMA network.. In this case, there are some disadvantages and
advantages from both of this network.
Keywords
: GSM network, CDMA network, the steps,
the advantages, the disadvantages.
Introduction
The advancement of information
technology and telecommunications are starting gate toward
human life which is better and more
efficient as the effects of the knowledge developed by humans. In every years, Technology continues to grow rapidly in all fields.
One of them in the field of
communication. Long time ago, advance to communicate with each others are still difficulties, but with
the development of science and technology,
the problem of communication has not been a problem again. The need for convenience in communicating
now very feels different from the
ancients. As well as a way to send information from
one person to another person.
Before the discovery of
the telephone, people used to communicate in different ways, starting with the use of smoke, sending letters, until finally found
a communication tool is the telephone. When a communication
device such as telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. It has not
been recognized by most of
the human race, but with the invention
it turned out to be
the beginning of the development of telecommunications eventually be developed rapidly as
now. The Cellular
technology of development growing very quickly, so
that the function of the phone
is not in use as
a communication only, with additions of features such as digital cameras, radios,
high-resolution color LCD with mobile phones into
devices that are sophisticated and
smart.
In the first time, telecommunication devices still use the big
cable complex and
a lot, cables devices
are still in use today but experts are still thinking
of switching to mobile telecommunications and practical
nature. And that's what the foundation and background
for the progress of the development of
wireless telecommunications (wireless
/ unguided). Wireless Communication Mobile is
a tool which is communication
without wires practically
move with Mobile
Device. This wireless technology has grown rapidly in the
last decade. Principle of wireless communication using
a separate radio channel
for communicating with the cell site.
And now, phone networks are more advanced. But not many people know about
the mobile network they are using,
including advantages and disadvantages of
these networks, as well as the way of working of
both the network. In this paper will
explain the network used in the
phone which is a CDMA network and
GSM network.
Discussion
According Miarso (2007: 62), technology
is a process that increases the added value, the process uses or produces a
product, the resulting product does not separate from other products that
already exist, and therefore an integral part of a system.
According Forsdale (1981), a expert of communication and education
"communication is the process by the which a system
is established, maintained
and Altered by means of shared signals that Operate
According to rules"
Since the first time a mobile
phone technology and mobile phones were introduced in Indonesia and the
world, while it also appears the two
types of networks are used in a mobile phone.
The two types of the networks are GSM network and CDMA network. GSM and CDMA are two different kinds
of technologies that support the functionality of a mobile phone, especially
the phone functions and Short
Messages Service (SMS) functions. The
introduction of mobile technology based on GSM and CDMA,
maybe this can be one of the introduction of mobile technology based on GSM and CDMA,
maybe this can be one consideration if we want
to buy a mobile device, because this time the
mobile device is no longer used
just to communicate, but has become fairly high mobility among those
who are busy with the business.
1.
Definition of GSM
network and CDMA network.
a.
Global
System for Mobile Communication (GSM)
GSM itself is its own GSM stands for
Global System for Mobile Communication. From the name it has been very clear,
that GSM was deliberately created for the benefit of a wireless network using a
mobile phone. At the time it was first launched en masse, working on GSM
network frequencies of 900 MHz which is a second-generation communication
system, or what we are familiar with the term 2G which can make access to the
internet.
GSM itself is basically working with features timeslot, which is one of the developments of Time Division Multiple Access technology, which allows each user to be able to transmit data and information based on the unit divided by time. This makes each data packet will divided up into a particular timeslot. This timeslot is a slot that will be used by the GSM network for some time or temporary.
GSM technology is now highly developed, where many operator GSM entered into a 3G or third generation networks. The third generation of GSM system can allow a person to communicate better with voice, text and data, and has been widely used in Indonesia.

b.
Code
Division Multiple Access (CDMA)
CDMA itself is short for Code Division Multiple Access. This extension can be
interpreted as a multi access
can be achieved by using certain codes. Technically, CDMA network users will
be using the unique code in order to access existing channels on the system. A unique code, means that every
user will have
codes that are different from each other.
CDMA itself was originally used for military radio communications system of the United States, which later in the 90 developed by Qualcomm that later patent. In 1993, serve as the CDMA digital cellular standard in the United States.

2.
The Differences between
GSM network and CDMA network.
a.
The Coverage of BTS
Base
Transceiver Station or BTS is a telecommunications infrastructure that
facilitates wireless communication between communication devices and network
operator. The
first aspect that we can compare between
GSM and CDMA coverage
is area and
also the number of base stations. Can be seen clearly, that extensive coverage
of GSM base stations owned more than the CDMA.
This is because some areas do not have many customers, so that in make development of CDMA
BTS also declined. In addition, the popularity of GSM also increased the effect, why the number of base stations being owned by GSM
is much more when
compared to CDMA.
b.
The Roaming Capabilities.
Roaming
is the process of changing the services of the
Home Network to Other Network. The second aspect that we can compare the
difference in GSM and CDMA are the roaming capability.
Roaming is the
ability of a telecommunications
network in order to work in certain areas. Technically,
GSM has a roaming
capability, which makes GSM can be used
anywhere in the region in the area of Indonesia,
in general.
Different from the GSM, CDMA can not always be used freely. Because when you use CDMA-based network then you will incur additional costs, which is the cost of roaming. To avoid this, it is usually some CDMA network operator will introduce service features combo to avoid roaming, which enables a number of CDMA operators have the same number as the GSM number, so it is not affected by roaming.

c.
The
Number of Users.
If we see
based on the number of users, then it is definitely GSM is the most widely used operator in Indonesia,
even the world, especially Europe.
This makes a lot of GSM operators to develop and expand its footprint to all corners. The opposite of the operator GSM, CDMA has far fewer users when
compared to GSM. This
makes many CDMA operators can not
compete, and is currently living
a few who survive in the competitive
mobile operator in Indonesia, even the world.
d.
The Prices Devices and Systems Services.
If we
look into the
difference of investment costs
to be incurred, then it certainly will affect the
cost of the device and also the cost of the cellular network system services. CDMA has a low investment cost will cause
the device to a mobile phone
which operates in CDMA networks have a cheaper
price. One concrete example
is the popular
Apple phone, iPhone
4. There are two variants,
which is CDMA and
GSM. In terms of price, CDMA iPhone has a price
much cheaper than the GSM version. In
addition to the price of the
device, the subscription fee and
other costs associated with the
implementation of the CDMA network will be much cheaper
than the GSM.
e.
The Cost of Investment.
Differences between cellular networks
GSM and CDMA
also this can
also be seen from the investment costs incurred. The investment costs incurred for the implementation of a mobile network system using
a code or CDMA
technology is much cheaper when compared to GSM. It
due to the implementation of CDMA networks tend
to be easier and more simple, then of
course it will affect the cost of
the investment.
Not only that, the greater the ordinary issued it will get better internet signal is received, such as data packets. The data packet itself into lanes for entry and exit of data when connected to the internet, which is then transmitted in the network either using a cable or wireless. This is called the working principle of the network in general are different only in their use of media.

3.
The Similarity between
GSM network and CDMA network.
a.
The Quality of Network and Signal in Residence.
The
quality of network
at the location where you live can also be a
consideration. If it turns out
that a good network
quality in the neighborhood
where you live is a CDMA cellular network,
then you can use
the CDMA to the needs of your home, such as the use of a
modem and telephone everyday. GSM and
CDMA equally be
used as a modem device is minimalist and flexible,
because just by using
the USB port. USB modem function
model is very often
used by students,
especially for students.
b.
The Functionality.
In terms of functionality of GSM and CDMA also could be an option, as both have almost diverse functionality. However, for stability and also coverage, may GSM slightly superior when compared to CDMA. However, CDMA has good signal, and also the security of data which is also very good, especially for electronic transactions. Therefore, for users who require security and comfort when performing data access, perhaps CDMA network could be your mainstay.

Conclusion
Communication
technology will continue to evolve
with the times and the increasing
human need for communication more practical. It also
must be balanced with the
knowledge of the technology, at
least be able to keep up with
technology and developing era.
The nature of data communication,
there are several elements that a communication process can take place properly. These elements
may be, the source of data, media and
data receiver. In the data communications, the medium used is wired and wirelessly.
The communication
channel without Cable (Wireless),
such as GSM, CDMA,
and cellular phone. Satellite is part of the LAN, which itself is a
wireless internet connection from one
device to another without using cables. While the satellite is a relay station (amplifier)
that transmits microwave signals over great distances.
.Today, mobile
communications play an increasingly
significant role in meeting the needs of telecommunications, especially mobile systems. Currently
the number of telephone users reached
± 1 billion
and this figure exceeded
the number of fixed telephone network
users. So at that time the
wireless communication would be
the capital of the dominant
access technology.
